The Miryang gang rape, known in South Korea as the Miryang middle school girls rape incident, was a criminal incident that occurred in Miryang, South Korea in 2004. At least 41 male high school students gang raped several middle school and high school girls over the course of 11 months.[1] The case provoked controversy due to police mistreatment of the victims and lenient handling of the offenders.[2]
The victims lived in Ulsan and Changwon, while the perpetrators were from Miryang and Changwon.[3] The perpetrators were initially believed to be members of a high school gang,[4] but little evidence for this was found.[5] They met the first 14-year-old victim over the phone. When she visited them, she was sexually assaulted, with the scene being filmed for blackmail.[2] According to police, she was raped up to 10 times by 3 to 24 high school boys in each occurrence, they apparently did it for no reason, just enjoyment and/or revenge from a breakup. After the sisters' aunt reported the rapes to the police,[1] three of the boys were arrested. Following protests from the victims and public, another nine students were arrested, and 29 booked without detention.[2] Family members of the perpetrators threatened the victims,[2] warning them that they should "watch out from now on for reporting our sons to police."[4] In a television interview, a parent of one of the offenders stated, "Why should we feel sorry for the victim's family? Why don't you consider our suffering? Who can resist temptation when girls are trying to seduce boys? The Suryanelli rape case (also called the Suryanelli sex scandal)[1] refers to a case of kidnapping and subsequent rape of a 16-year-old school girl from Suryanelli, Kerala, India, in 1996.[2] The girl was allegedly lured with the promise of marriage on 16 January 1996 and kidnapped. She was allegedly raped by 37 of the 42 accused persons, over a period of 40 days. The remaining had abetted the crime.[3] After P.J. Kurien, the then Union Minister and later Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman belonging to UDF led by Congress party, was named, the issue was politicised, due to a then upcoming general election.[2] Several women's rights activists like K. Ajitha[4] and Suja Susan George,[5] and women's organisations, like NFIW and Anweshi, have taken an interest in the case.[6][7]
The court accepted the evidence proving the girl had stayed at the various places she mentioned, but said that these did not prove non-consent. The girl then just passed the age of consent (then 16 years), so the cases could not be treated as statutory rape. The court noted she had given away her hostel fees to someone and pawned her jewellery. She had given a false name while pawning it. She had been questioned in the Sister Abhaya murder case but she said she couldn't remember it. The court noted that she was expelled from the Mount Carmel School, Kottayam, in Class 8, was home-tutored for a year, before joining Little Flower Girls High School, Nallathanni. When asked for the reason of expulsion, she said that she used to wet her bed and her older sister used to cleaned it up. But, after her sister graduated, she could no longer clean up. But, her tutor, presented as a witness, said that she was expelled for bad conduct. There was also evidence that the father kept close tabs on her movements and frequently called the nuns of the convent school. On 16 January, the school had called the father to inform him that the girl had sought permission to go and give her clothes to the laundry.[11]
